The government has drafted the Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 2019, which proposes a twentyfold increase in fines for driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to the new proposal, first-time offenders will face a fine of NPR 10,000. Additionally, honking in restricted areas, driving without proper documents, using a mobile phone while driving, or failing to wear a helmet or seatbelt will result in a fine of NPR 5,000. Littering on the road, engaging in misconduct, or smoking while driving will also be subject to penalties.
Traffic Checking Exceeding speed limits will incur a fine of NPR 5,000, while reckless driving will result in a fine of NPR 10,000. Driving a stolen vehicle will carry a fine of NPR 50,000. Furthermore, tampering with or removing traffic signals will be penalized with fines ranging from NPR 5,000 to NPR 10,000.
The new law will also mandate embedded number plates on all vehicles. Additionally, it proposes incorporating road safety education into the school curriculum.
