On Tuesday evening, a huge mudslide and flood hit Chumjung Khola in Chhoser, Ward No. 4 of Lomanthang Rural Municipality, Upper Mustang. The disaster lasted about three hours and caused big problems. It swept away one iron bridge and three wooden bridges, damaging a total of six bridges in the area.
The flood carried mud and debris from the highlands above Chumjung Khola, near the Nepal-China border. It also damaged two concrete motorable bridges, one in Lomanthang and another under construction in Samjung. This has made it hard for people to travel in Upper Mustang, as these bridges were important for getting around.
Thankfully, no one was hurt, and no animals were lost. The mudslide and flood threatened a hotel in the middle of the river and two houses in Nyamdo village, about 400 meters away. Brave police and security teams quickly moved people to safety. A nine-member team, led by officers from Chhoser and Nechung, is now watching the area to keep everyone safe.
The flood has calmed down, but the damage to the bridges is a big problem for Lomanthang Rural Municipality. Local leaders, like Chairperson Tasi Narbu Gurung, are warning people downstream along the Kali Gandaki River to stay careful. They are checking the damage and planning how to fix the bridges so people can travel again.
This mudslide and flood show how strong nature can be. Heavy rain caused the disaster, and now the people of Upper Mustang need help to rebuild. The government and local teams are working together to make sure everyone stays safe and to repair the damage in Chumjung Khola.
