New Delhi, July 22, 2025 – Jagdeep Dhankhar, India’s Vice President, has stepped down from his role due to health concerns. The 74-year-old leader announced his resignation on Monday, July 21, 2025, after chairing the first day of the Parliament’s Monsoon Session. His decision shocked many, as he was expected to serve until August 2027.
In a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar wrote, “To prioritize health concerns and follow medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately.” He thanked President Murmu for her support and described their working relationship as “wonderful.” He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Members of Parliament for their trust and cooperation during his time in office.
Dhankhar, who became Vice President in August 2022, also served as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His tenure was marked by active participation, though he faced challenges, including disagreements with opposition parties. Earlier this year, he underwent a heart procedure, which may have influenced his decision to focus on his health concerns.

With Dhankhar stepping down, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh will handle daily duties until a new Vice President is elected. The Constitution requires an election within six months to fill the vacancy. Names like Harivansh are being considered as potential replacements.
