COVID 19 returns to Nepal??????
Sudurpaschim Province is back in the COVID-19 spotlight. Health officials have confirmed that three people who recently returned from India have tested positive for the virus. Among the infected are two men and one woman.
Hemraj Joshi, the epidemic focal person at the Sudurpaschim Provincial Health Directorate, said that all three patients had entered Nepal from India within the past few days. Upon arrival, they underwent routine health screenings and COVID-19 tests. Their reports came back positive.
These new cases are a stark reminder that while the world has moved on from the peak of the pandemic, COVID-19 is still circulating. The infected individuals are now in isolation, and health officials are closely monitoring their condition. Thankfully, none of them have shown severe symptoms so far, Joshi added.
Local authorities have started contact tracing to identify and test anyone who may have come in contact with the infected people. Health workers have been sent to the respective local levels to gather more information and offer health advice to communities.
Sudurpaschim Province has seen a decline in COVID-19 cases over the past year. But this latest development has raised concerns, especially because of cross-border movement with India, where daily case numbers have recently seen slight increases.
Joshi stressed the importance of remaining alert. “Though the number is small, it is a warning. People need to take safety measures seriously, especially when traveling or returning from abroad,” he said.
Public health offices in the province have been advised to stay prepared with isolation beds, testing kits, and emergency response teams. Community health workers have also been asked to spread awareness about symptoms, vaccination, and safety practices.
The Provincial Health Directorate is urging citizens to wear masks in crowded places, maintain hand hygiene, and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to regions with rising cases. People with symptoms such as fever, cough, and fatigue are encouraged to visit their nearest health center immediately.
Officials have not announced any travel restrictions yet, but discussions are ongoing about reintroducing border screening and quarantine protocols if more cases are detected.
As of now, Nepal’s overall COVID-19 situation remains under control, but provinces like Sudurpaschim with high cross-border travel need to stay extra vigilant. The Health Ministry continues to monitor developments and is ready to act swiftly if necessary.
Health experts are also urging the public to stay updated on their vaccination schedules, including booster doses, to strengthen protection.
