Energy Minister Deepak Khadka’s recent decisions regarding electricity supply and management have sparked significant controversy. He has been accused of obstructing Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) from importing electricity from India and spreading false rumors about load shedding. Allegations suggest that Khadka is working in favor of the Veolia group’s interests and is involved in various conspiracies to undermine NEA’s Executive Director, Kulman Ghising.
Electricity lineDuring winter, when electricity production in Nepal decreases, importing power from India is necessary. However, since India does not supply electricity at night, NEA has adopted a strategy to use Nepal’s reservoir-based hydropower projects for nighttime supply. Despite this, Minister Khadka has misrepresented the situation and fueled concerns about load shedding.
Khadka has allegedly interfered with NEA’s decisions, prevented the implementation of power import agreements with India, attempted to weaken Kulman Ghising, and sought to hand over major hydropower projects to private traders for weeks. There are also claims that he has intervened in contracts to serve the interests of Veolia and other private entities.
These controversial actions have raised questions about why the government continues to protect Khadka. Even leaders within the Congress party and the government are divided on this issue. Experts warn that his decisions could seriously impact Nepal’s electricity supply system.
