On June 12, 2025, a big accident happened in Ahmedabad, India. An Air India plane crashed just after it took off from the airport. The plane was going to London Gatwick. There were 242 people onboard. Sadly, 241 people died, and only one person survived.
This has become one of the worst plane crashes in India in many years. It is also the first time a Boeing 787 Dreamliner has ever crashed with deaths.

🛫 What Happened to the Plane?
The plane was Flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. It took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 PM local time. The flight was normal for a few seconds. Then something went very wrong.
The plane climbed to about 625 feet. Suddenly, it lost control and fell quickly. It crashed into a doctors’ hostel near the B.J. Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area. Right after the crash, there was a big explosion and fire. People nearby saw thick smoke and heard a very loud sound.
One man, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, was sitting in seat 11A. He was the only person to survive. He had some injuries but was able to walk away.
👀 What Did People See?
Many people living near the crash saw it happen. They said the plane was shaking and flying too low. Then they saw a fireball and heard screaming. Parts of the plane flew into houses, streets, and on top of buildings.
A mayday call (a distress message) was made by the pilots just before the plane vanished from radar.
🚑 Help Arrived Quickly
The police, fire trucks, ambulances, and rescue teams reached the crash site fast. More than 60 people from the area were also hurt. They were taken to hospitals nearby. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Army teams helped in rescue and recovery.
The crash site was closed off, and only rescue teams were allowed to enter. DNA testing is now being used to find out who the victims were.

🏛️ What Did the Government Do?
Many important leaders spoke about the crash:
Amit Shah, Home Minister of India, called Gujarat’s Chief Minister to help organize rescue efforts.
Ram Mohan Naidu, India’s Civil Aviation Minister, said all teams are working to find out what caused the crash.
Tata Group, the company that owns Air India, said they will give ₹1 crore (about $120,000) to each family who lost someone. They also started a helpline for families
